Ancient Rome Religion and War
Ancient Romans religion was Polytheistic however, they were also influenced by Hellenistic (which was Greek). Romans thought of themselves as highly religious people, Romans believed in many Gods and Goddess' such as Mars, God of war, Mercury, the Messenger of the Gods, Neptune, God of the Seas, Janus God of the Doorway, Diana, Goddess of Hunting, Vesta, Goddess of the Hearth, Minerva, Goddess of Healing and Wisdom, and Venus, Goddess of Love. After the reign of the empire Augustus Ceasar the emperor was considered to be a god he was worshiped on special occasions just like every other god, which was usually a public holiday. The holiday gave people the chance to visit the temple. At the temple the priest would sacrifice an animal to god as a offering. Temples were built throughout the Roman Empire for people to worship in every temple in the Roman Empire always had the same patterned roof, the roof was supported by pillars and triangular shaped. Each family home would have an shrine and a altar, the Romans personal household gods were called lairs and the head of the household (mother or father) would led family prayers around the shrine every single day. This service was so important even slaves were invited to pray. The Roman warfare and army was considered most advanced of its time the Roman army created the Roman Empire, Rome itself found it very beneficial from the riches that they brought back of what areas they defeated and conquered. All new Army recruits always ended up fit and healthy, training was harsh and so was failure punishments. In battle the new recruits were always placed at the front to protect the more experienced soldiers the most important unit in the army was the Legion this had about 5000-6000 the Legionnairs would forward and threw their pillar at the enemy, while the enemy was distracted the Legionnairs would run in closer with their swords.
